I think of this as a prayer rug sock--toes always heading for the holy city. The construction of this sock makes a "freesole" you can remove all or any part of it and replace it as the necessity arises. This is a useful technique for museum quality socks that will be worn with pride and pleasure.

US size 2 (2.75mm) needles, or size to obtain gauge
Gauge: 28 sts and 48 rows + 4" (10cm) over Stockinette stitch
Sizes: Women's small (medium, large)
Single color version with twisted stitch pattern: 7 (7¾, 8½)" [18 (19.5, 21.5)cm] foot circumference
Two color version with embroidered pattern: 7½ (8¼, 9)" [19 (21,23)cm] foot circumference
