Tina's bright holiday colorway immediate brought to mind a great big, old-fashioned candy cane like the ones you can still get from Hammond's Candies in Colorado. Not the peppermit ones, mind you, but the mouth-puckeringly delicious cherry flavor.
I set about translating this impression into stitches and quickly settled on cables. Whatever motif I used, I knew it needed to be small and quiet so that the colors could take center stage. I settled ona very simple two-stitch cable that ripples its way down the cuff, made nice and stretchy by columns of purl stitches. I like my socks to have smooth, comfortable tops, so I split up the cable motif into two clinder candy canes that run along either edge of the instep.
My favorite part of this sock would have to be the heel, a standard flap-and-gusset that's been worked with alternating ends of the same skein. One stitche from one end, the next stitch from the other end, and so it goes. This makes the colors pop in an extraordinarily pointillistic way while also giving you a double-thick heel for greater padding and durability.
Best of all? Their short cuff promises swift completion and immediate enjoyment!
