Bluefaced Leicester is classified as a Longwool breed with a staple length range of 3-6 inches/80-150mm and a fiber diameter of 56s-60s count (28u-24u), which are the fiber numbers you need to spin a high luster yarn with lovely drapes. Cool trivia fiber: their name comes from the dark blue skin that you can see through the hair on their heads. BFL is a predominately white wool breed with a recessive black gene giving some naturally dark colored lambs. This top is a mix of these. The fiber itself is not black, but a lovely natural beige/grey. Because of this light/dark mix, there is a depth to the dyeing that is really quite wonderful.
