Vine Maple

Scappoose is rich with these. They are native to the Pacific Northwest. The Quinault's word for maple is maxo'atcainix, meaning basket tree. They used it for baskets and the charcoal form, burning the wood to mix with oil for black paint. It is a very beautiful and colorful tree all year, but especially so in the fall, as most maples are.
